Questions people ask
Straight answers; figures marked as the maker's come from WILDNEST's spec sheet. Anything else, ask in the chat.
›How many people does it sleep?
It's rated for 2–3 people: the maker gives a 660 lb maximum load, two adults and a child. The mattress is 79.5" long by 48" wide. The raised rear section is what makes a third sleeper workable.
›What are the dimensions open and closed?
Closed it's 85.43" × 54.33" × 7.87" — under 8 inches tall. Open it's 85.43" × 54.33" × 60.23". The sleeping area is 79.5" × 48".
›Can I sit up inside?
Yes — about 60" of height at the tall end. You can sit up, change clothes and play cards with the kids.
›How much does it weigh?
215 lb for the tent itself, typical for an aluminum hard shell with a real mattress and racks included. That weight is why we check your roof's dynamic rating before you buy. At the warehouse we help lift it on.
›How tall is it on my roof closed? Will it fit in my garage?
The shell is 7.87" tall on top of your crossbars. Add that and your bars to your vehicle's roof height to get the total; ask in the chat if you want us to do the math with you.
›Is it long enough for a tall person?
The mattress is 79.5" long — about 6'7". Someone up to about 6'4" sleeps flat with room at the feet, and the tall end is raised so your head isn't pressed against sloping fabric.
›Can I leave bedding inside when it's closed?
Yes. The 2.56" mattress stays in, and you can leave a sleeping bag or a thin duvet and pillows inside too, as long as the latches still close. That's the real convenience of a hard shell — at camp you pop the latches and the bed is made.
›How fast does it open and close?
About 5 seconds, by the maker's figure. Release the latches and the STABILUS® gas struts lift the shell on their own. To close, release Latch 1 and Latch 2 in sequence and press down. No cranks, no poles.
›Is it waterproof? What about heavy rain?
The tent body is 320 g polyester with YKK zippers and a transparent TPU rain fly over the skyview window, and the hard shell sheds rain from above. The maker rates it 4-season: UV-resistant, windproof, rainproof and snowproof.
›Can I use it in winter or snow?
Yes — it's rated 4-season. The honeycomb shell and flocked floor insulate from below, the 320 g fabric blocks wind, and the mattress's condensation layer keeps your sleeping bag dry. For deep winter, add a 12 V electric blanket through the Anderson port.
›What about condensation inside?
Three things fight condensation: the flocked floor lining, the 0.39" condensation mat under the mattress that lets air circulate, and the raised rear vent window plus mesh side windows for airflow.
›How comfortable is the mattress?
It's a 2.56" three-layer system: a 1.96" non-deformable foam sleeping mat, a 0.39" condensation mat underneath that lets air circulate, and a 0.20" soft 'ocean mat' on top. It keeps its shape trip after trip, unlike a thin single-layer pad.
›How do I power the LED light?
Two options: plug it into the tent's built-in USB outlet, or into any power bank you already own. No wiring or vehicle modification needed.
›Will it fit my vehicle?
It fits trucks, SUVs, vans and wagons whose roof system AND crossbars are both rated for at least 215 lb dynamic load — the tent's own weight. The bars need to be at least 28.3" long and no more than 70.9" apart. Use the fit check on this page; it answers for your exact make, model and year.
›How long does installation take?
About 10 minutes with the included mounting kit, by the maker's figure, once the tent is on your bars: it clamps on from inside the shell with four brackets, no drilling. At the warehouse we help mount it so you drive away ready to camp; with our own van install in the Bay Area, plan on about 90 minutes.
›Is my roof strong enough? What's dynamic vs static load?
Dynamic load is what the roof carries while driving — the 215 lb tent, so your roof and bars must be rated for at least 215 lb dynamic. Static load is when parked; a roof supports more when it isn't moving, which is how the maker can rate the tent for 660 lb of people sleeping inside. The fit check on this page compares your vehicle's dynamic rating.
›Why do I have to pay a deposit?
The deposit takes a tent out of available inventory and puts your name on it, and it locks today's price. It's fully refundable until you take the tent, and you pay the rest only when you've seen it.
›Is the deposit refundable?
Yes. If you change your mind before you take your tent, the $300 comes back to your card in full — one click from your confirmation email.
›Why can't you ship it to me?
In the Bay Area we can: our own van delivers and installs it on your roof (the product page quotes the fee for your ZIP). Further away, a 285 lb crate goes by freight, and pickup at the warehouse is usually simpler: no freight damage risk, you inspect before paying the balance, and we mount it on the spot.
›Is there a warranty?
Yes — 2 years on the shell and hardware and 1 year on the fabric, honoured by us here in California. The maker also states a lifetime warranty on the STABILUS struts. And because you inspect the tent at pickup, there's no 'it arrived damaged' risk.
›Can I see it in person before I put down the deposit?
Yes — book a warehouse visit or come to a demo weekend; the chat on this site shows open slots for your ZIP. Either way you inspect the tent before paying the balance.
›Does the price include tax?
$1,999 is the product price; California sales tax for your ZIP is added at checkout, and the cart shows the estimate before you pay.
›What if I don't like it when I see it at the warehouse?
Then you don't pay the balance, and we refund your $300 deposit in full.
›Is it made in China?
Yes, the tent is manufactured in China, like most hard shells on the market. The difference is in the components: STABILUS struts, YKK zippers and an aluminum shell, plus a 2-year warranty we honour here in California.
Goes with it
2-year shell & hardware, 1-year fabric. Claims handled by us in the Bay Area, not a factory abroad.
7 days: free returns, we pay shipping (van pickup in the Bay Area). 8–30 days: returnable, shipping deducted. After 30 days: no returns. Unused, original packaging.
- • Needs a roof system and crossbars rated ≥ 215 lb dynamic, with a ≥ 28" spread — many compact SUVs and all sedans are out; the fit finder checks yours.
- • Adds 215 lb on the roof: expect 1–2 mpg less and more wind noise at 70 mph.
- • Not a 4-season alpine tent; in coastal fog, keep the condensation mat under the mattress.
